Wikipedia:Files for deletion/Replaceable fair use

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Until processes changed on October 8, 2011 as a result of a deletion discussion at templates for discussion regarding Template:Di-replaceable fair use disputed (which ended in the template's deletion), non-free files that were nominated for speedy deletion on account of their being considered replaceable with free content were subject to a unique deletion discussion process in the event that the file's replaceability was disputed.

The method of nominating a replaceable non-free file for deletion is through the speedy deletion process, ending in a speedy deletion under criterion F7. Users would add the dated speedy deletion tag {{di-replaceable fair use}} to a file's description page, and after being subjected to a waiting period, the file would be deleted in uncontroversial cases. This process continues unchanged today.

In cases where the replaceability was disputed prior to October 8, 2011, users disputing the nomination were instructed not to remove the original dated speedy deletion tag, and to add the {{di-replaceable fair use disputed}} tag alongside the original template. This was to be accompanied by a discussion on the file's talk page regarding whether the non-free content was truly replaceable by free content. When the waiting period expired, an administrator would evaluate the discussion, and retain or delete the file based on the result of the discussion. In the event that the file was closed as keep, the tags would be removed from the file description page and the discussion left open indefinitely on the file talk page. In the event of deletion, the discussion would be closed in the usual way and the file deleted. The now-orphaned talk page containing the closed discussion would be retained.

After October 8, 2011, when the dispute template was deleted, the process changed to one closely resembling proposed deletion. The {{di-replaceable fair use}} tag was changed to instruct users who wish to dispute a nomination to simply remove the tag. Additionally, those advocating for deletion were instructed not to return the tag to the page after it had been removed, but rather to begin a deletion discussion at files for deletion.

The realignment of processes after the conclusion of the deletion discussion also left the old file talk page discussions in a unique situation as well. With the deletion, these file talk pages were the result of a now-obsolete process, located outside of the normal deletion channels in project space, and technically eligible for speedy deletion under criterion G8 as orphaned talk pages. These file talk pages were moved to project space as subpages under files for deletion in order to correct this oversight.
