Portal:Guitar (edit | talk | history | links | watch | logs)

Abandoned micro-portal.

Created[1] in June 2006‎ by Tommaso456 (talk · contribs), who last edited in July 2006‎. The lead of WP:POG has said since late 2006 "Do not create a portal if you do not intend to assist in its regular maintenance", but that has not happened here.

The list of subpages at Special:PrefixIndex/Portal:Guitar does not look to unhealthy at first glance, but ....

  • there are 7 selecetd article pages, all created in 2007 by User:Arjun01, but only the first three have any content. Portal:Guitar/Selected article/4, /5, /6 and 7 have all been empty shells sunce Arjun01 created them in 2007.
  • Portal:Guitar/Guitar news contains only the items added in June 2006‎ by Tommaso456.
  • There is a set of monthly anniversary pages (Portal:Guitar/Anniversaries/January etc), created in 2007 by Drake Hyneman (talk · contribs) and CiaranG (talk · contribs). All are unsourced.
  • Portal:Guitar/Did you know contains ten items, but the most recent addition was in 2013. . Per WP:DYK, "The DYK section showcases new or expanded articles that are selected through an informal review process. It is not a general trivia section" ... but this seven-plus-old list loses the newness, so even if these items are atually derived from DYK (I haven't checked, but in old portals they rarely are) its only effect is as a trivia section, contrary to WP:TRIVIA.

Per WP:PORTAL, "Portals serve as enhanced 'Main Pages' for specific broad subjects". But this is abandoned relic less useful in every respect than the head article Guitar and its navbox.

WP:POG requires that portals should be about "broad subject areas, which are likely to attract large numbers of interested readers and portal maintainers". There is a theoretical argument that even a single musical instrument can be viewed as a broad topic when it has such a long history and such wide popularity as the guitar ... but in prcatice, we have evidence to refute that: this portal has not attracted maintainers.

Two newish features of the Wikimedia software means that the article and navboxes offers most of the functionality which portals like this set out to offer. Both features are available only to ordinary readers who are not logged in, but you can test them without logging out by right-clicking on a link, and the select "open in private window" (in Firefox) or "open in incognito window" (Chrome).

  1. mouseover: on any link, mouseover shows you the picture and the start of the lead. So the preview-selected page-function of portals is redundant: something almost as good is available automatically on any navbox or other set of links. Try it by right-clicking on this link to Template:Guitars, open in a private/incognito tab, and mouseover any link.
  2. automatic imagery galleries: clicking on an image brings up an image gallery of all the images on that page. It's full-screen, so it's actually much better than a click-for-next image gallery on a portal. Try it by right-clicking on this link to the article Guitar, open in a private/incognito tab, and click on any image to start the slideshow,

Similar features have been available since 2015 to users of Wikipedia's Android app.

Maybe someday someone will build and maintain a guitar portal which actually adds value for readers. But if so, they will do better to start afresh, rather than building on these old content forks and outdated DYKs.

So I propose that this portal and its sub-pages be deleted per WP:TNT, without prejudice to recreating a curated portal in accordance with whatever criteria the community may have agreed at that time. BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 23:23, 2 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

  • Delete - This is basically a superset of Portal:Classical guitar, and the following table shows that portals for instruments result in less than 30 daily pageviews, and less than 3% of the traffic of the head article:
Title Portal Page Views Article Page Views Notes Ratio Percent
Percussion 11 1087 Originator inactive since 2011. 98.8 1.0%
Guitar 27 2835 Originator inactive since 2006. 105.0 1.0%
Pipe organ 9 595 Originator inactive since 2013, but portal abandoned in 2007. 66.1 1.5%
Classical guitar 11 443 Originator inactive since 2006. 40.3 2.5%

If anyone wants to build any new musical instrument portals, they know where Deletion Review is. Robert McClenon (talk) 01:17, 3 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]
