I am nominating Peterdownunder (talk • changes • e-mail • blocks • protections • deletions • moves • right changes) for the position of checkuser. Peter has many unique qualities that lend to wards him becoming a good checkuser. Firstly, he is very active, and often at a time when no current CU is active. Peter is also a mature man with a mature man's wisdom and mind. He deals with young children every day and does a great deal to volunteer for not only the global village but also his local community. Peter has done an awful lot of reading up about checkuser, IP technology and things like proxies as well ask asking many questions showing a quick learning curve. He has the support of both myself and I am sure the other checkusers will be there to answer any questions in the interim period all new checkusers experience when we start. Please consider him for the position. fr33kman 02:58, 12 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Q What is Network Address Translation? Jon@talk:~$ 07:33, 12 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
- Answer: Network Address Translation or NAT is a method that allows a large number of IP addresses on one network to use a single IP address on another network. This is done through a router or some broadband modems. It can be used as part of a firewall and security. It is also used by a number of companies and ISP's to limit the number of "real" IP addresses that they need.
It is different to a proxy server which needs to be configured on an individual computer. NAT is "invisible", so an individual user may not be aware that it is being used. Some routers use dynamic NAT, which means that an individual computer could connect to another network using a pool of different IP addresses each time it is used. It is called translation because the NAT router "translates" the individual computer's IP address to one provided by the router.--Peterdownunder (talk) 12:50, 12 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
