Suggestion - Archaeologists (and perhaps Engineers)

Tentatively suggesting an archaeology focus for October? Archaeology because we were recently reminded by @Joe Roe: that Wikiproject Archaeology/Women in Archaeology Taskforce is very close to completing some of its goals & we (I) wondered whether we might use October to run an event to support the taskforce's objective. October is relevant as 17 October is International Archaeology Day. The tasks left are discussed here, and include

• 20+ articles from the target redlist (see here)
• De-stubbing 157 articles (see here)

What do other people think? Of course, articles on women in archaeology outside these lists are incredibly welcome too! Lajmmoore (talk) 19:35, 26 July 2024 (UTC)

Thanks for bringing this here Lucy. It would be great to have a follow up to the last archaeology events in 2016 and 2018. Honestly, I'm not sure how much potential there is left in the crowd-sourced redlist, but there are 5000+ on the wikidata list. Commonly, in October, Women in Red facilitates its annual STEM Women event in association with Ada Lovelace Day (second Tuesday of October). So Archaeologists would certainly be part of that... but perhaps this year, it could be a special focus? --Rosiestep (talk) 21:41, 26 July 2024 (UTC)

Sounds good to me. Are the WP:WikiProject Classical Greece and Rome folks in the loop on this? And WP:WikiProject Women's Classical Committee? Hello from the WP:WikiProject Women's Classical Committee (which Lajmmoore is also part of!) - this sounds great and we've agreed to give our October editing session (date TBC but usually around the 20th-25th of the month) an archaeology redlist/stub focus to tie in with this! • I agree archaeologists deserve to be covered but as a result of increased interest in engineers (see WiR's talk page), I suggest we give separate focus to them too. Both could be introduced as specific items of interest in connection with our traditional October coverage of women in STEM. According to my projections of the increasing numbers of women's biographies, the number of women's biographies should be hitting 20% of all biographies by the end of the year. I wondered if it would perhaps be worth doing an end-of-year edit-a-thon to help us nudge it over the line. Unlike the usual themed characters of our monthly edit-a-thons, this one could be more of a free-for-all to encourage as much creation as possible. Non-geofocus ideas

Revolutionary women

Hey all. For quite a while now I've been working on articles about revolutionary women (i.e. women who either participated in revolutions or were involved in revolutionary movements/organisations). Most of my submissions have been to other themed events, but I was thinking it might be fun to do a specific edit-a-thon focused on revolutionary women. Interwiki edit-a-thon

I was just fiddling around with the number of links redlist, as I noticed it hadn't updated in over a year, and managed to get it back to working order. It got me thinking whether we should have an edit-a-thon focused specifically on creating articles with a high number of interwiki links; the redlist includes articles with 7 or more interwiki links. This could be a nice way to focus on the higher importance (for lack of a better term) articles that other language wikis have recognised as worthy of articles. --Grnrchst (talk) 09:46, 8 September 2024 (UTC)

Checklist for updates of virtual meetups

This section is purely administrative. It is not about the ongoing discussions of topics.

WiR generally has a variety of monthly, quarterly and annual events. WiR also sends out an “invitation” to its registered participants notifying them of those events. This is an effort to list tasks associated with the administrative tasks of updating and adding pages. We will be maintaining this list to assist with Quality Assurance. As of March 2024 we are working with a new set of cascading templates. Because the template speak to each other the preview of the template might not be as expected. For example 302 might look like 304. Additionally some pages won't preview correctly unless the editor purges the page to update the cache.

The interrelated templates allow us to make changes and pages once, without updating new and past events throughout the WiR ecosystem. This will ultimately reduce mistakes, bad directs, and misinformation. The coders involved are watching these pages to ensure they work correctly. March 2024 is the first iteration. If direction are not clear it is the drafter's fault - not the coders, so please be gentle.

• Step 1 - Add details of the event to Wikipedia:WikiProject Women in Red/events (see instructions at Template:WikiProject Women in Red/doc#Technical info). This will automatically update the various lists of events, and also allows editors to tag the article talk pages with {{WikiProject Women in Red}} or its shortcut {{WIR}}.
• Step 2
• Create the event page at Wikipedia:WikiProject Women in Red/Meetup/n where n is the number of the new event. You can use the {{WIR meetup header}} template to help you. {{WIR meetup header}} will populate the event header and right side infoboxes. * Then copy and sections from previous month to add boilerplate language. For example, start at Participants copy through the bottom of the page (XYZ as an example). update month and event number in the pasted sections.
• Then add the "body" of the page (welcome, redlists, purpose) using a similar editathon as a starting point.
• Step 3 Create a new category for meetup articles (e.g. at Category:WikiProject Women in Red meetup 319 articles). Add the template {{WIR category}} to the new category.
• Step 4 Create the invite (e.g. Wikipedia:WikiProject Women in Red/Outreach/2024#March 2024) using the previous month's invite as a go-by.
• Step 5 Invite and receive feedback from a sufficient number of WiR enthusiasts that the event page and invite are okay. Mark reviewed items with {{ok}}
• Step 6 Send out MassMessage notification.

Yes, recently completed can be merged into past events. The reason I did this is that they are kept separate on Wikipedia:WikiProject Women in Red/Events so I was following that. One biography a week

Not many of us are able to write a new article every day but most of us should be in a position to create one biography a week. How about making this a subsection of #1day1woman, starting in January 2024? Each participant could have a separate slot in which their new biographies could be listed. There would be no need for biographies to meet specific criteria such as minimum length but all new articles should meet normal standards of acceptance. We could provide virtual awards for those who manage to continue for three months (with at least 13 articles), six months (26 articles), nine months (39 articles) and for the whole of 2024 (52 articles). Participants should of course be able to create and list more than one new biography a week if they wish but everyone should try to create at least one per week. If contributors are able to keep this up, I believe it could have a significant effect on how we progress. There should be no need to participate from the beginning of January. Participants could join whenever they want and simply calculate periods of three months from the date of their first addition. Is this workable as it is or does anyone have other suggestions?--Ipigott (talk) 10:43, 9 December 2023 (UTC)

This idea is really attractive to me. Doing 1 article a day is just not workable for my schedule, especially since my free time to edit is largely just on the weekends. But managing one women's biography a week seems way more doable. I wholeheartedly support this proposal. Silverseren^C 21:05, 10 December 2023 (UTC)

@Ipigott: Just jumping in to say: I like this idea too. I haven't managed to carve out much time for article creation in a long while, and I'd really like to get back to that in 2024. Are we in touch with what events the world wants WiR to facilitate?

In a recent discussion on my talkpage with Ipigott regarding WiR events, I asked, ... I'm also curious if we aren't in touch with what events the world wants us to facilitate... I suggested 3 quarterly campaigns for later this year: social influencers (Apr, May, June), sports (Jul, Aug, Sep), politics (Oct, Nov, Dec). There were also other salient points made in that section of my talkpage. Ian suggested that I shift the proposal regarding the 3 quarterly campaigns here. I think these three-month opportunities could serve as an important additional attraction. Contributors will have time to become familiar with the background and will be able to write about women who are gaining significance in the modern world. Many of our younger contributors should find the topics more in line with their interests than those requiring an interest in history. While I don't often write BLPs, I look forward, for example, to writing about notable TikTokers and YouTubers. It will be interesting to see if there is wider support for this venture.--Ipigott (talk) 09:29, 10 February 2024 (UTC)

New editor retention

As a general follow-up to a chat at my user talkpage with Ipigott about mentoring new contributors and ideas related to incentives to improve participation, I don't really have specifics to offer, but instead a few general perspectives to perhaps consider.

My perspective is based on how as an attorney, I became familiar with what is known as 'client-centered lawyering' (brief example overview: Client Centered Lawyering: An Avenue for Change, Aqdas Khudadad, October 12, 2022, University of Cincinnati Legal Clinic), and later in my M.Ed program, 'student-centered teaching' (there are a variety of monikers for this practice) (brief example overview: Student-Centered Learning: In Principle and in Practice (Christa Green and Christopher Harrington, July 20, 2020, Michigan Virtual Learning Research Institute). Ipigott, not to put you on the spot too much, but you seem to take what could be considered an 'editor-centered mentoring' approach, and I think this is a solid foundation upon which further efforts could be developed.

There is substantial research literature available on these subjects that may be helpful to review and adapt for new editor support and retention purposes. I use the term "retention" intentionally because of its use in the education field as a metric, so this may be a helpful keyword.

On a more specific note, maybe it would be helpful for new editors to have access to reflections from editors with more experience, about what it was like to be a new editor, what they wish they knew/what was a surprise to learn, and strategies that helped for coping with challenges. For this Wikiproject, perhaps we could tailor reflections to also include a focus related to writing about women. Beccaynr (talk) 19:24, 19 February 2024 (UTC)
