Sir Charles William Fremantle (1834–1914) was a British official who served for 26 years as deputy master of the Royal Mint, and for most of that time as its executive head. Educated at Eton College, he served as private secretary to several officials, latterly Benjamin Disraeli, including while Disraeli was prime minister in 1868. Disraeli appointed him as deputy to Thomas Graham, the master of the Mint. Graham died in September 1869, and the Treasury decided the mastership should go to the chancellor of the exchequer of the day, with the deputy master the head of the Royal Mint. Fremantle began work to modernise the antiquated Royal Mint. Fremantle sought to beautify the coinage and, believing the Mint's engraver, Leonard Charles Wyon, not up to the task, sought to do so by resurrecting classic coin designs, like Benedetto Pistrucci's depiction of Saint George and the Dragon for the sovereign. In 1894, at the age of sixty, Fremantle retired from the Royal Mint. (Full article...)

Gravitational waves
[edit]Apologies for the short notice on this suggestion, but 14 September marks the anniversary of the first detection of gravitational waves, and I wondered if this should be added to the list. --Lpmn (talk) 13:40, 13 September 2016 (UTC)
- Because of WP:RECENT, we usually wait at least 2 years before running articles on OTD. So I'll put it in the staging area for next year. Thanks. —howcheng {chat} 16:50, 13 September 2016 (UTC)
- @Lpmn: Done. Would you mind checking the wording to make sure I got it right? Thanks. —howcheng {chat} 17:23, 13 September 2016 (UTC)
- @Howcheng: I think it's a little unusual to suggest that they were predicted by Poincaré (I'm not sure it's true, given that 1905 predates General Relativity by 10 years).
- It's what the gravitational wave article says:
In 1905 Henri Poincare first predicted gravitational waves (ondes gravifiques) emanating from a body and propagating at the speed of light as being required by the formalism of spacetime.

2019 question
[edit]Hi Howcheng, can you please check 1979 item Nur Muhammad Taraki? Seems he was overthrown/detained, not assassinated, on 14 Sept ("resulting in Taraki's overthrow on 14 September 1979 and subsequent murder on 8 October"). Thanks, JennyOz (talk) 06:04, 13 September 2019 (UTC)
