The arrondissement of Altkirch is an arrondissement of France in the Haut-Rhin department in the Grand Est region. Its capital is the city of Altkirch.
History
[change | change source]When the Haut-Rhin department was created on 1790, the arrondissement of Altkirch was part of that original department.[2]
Geography
[change | change source]The arrondissement of Altkirch is in the southwest of the Haut-Rhin department. It is bordered to the northeast by the Thann-Guebwiller arrondissement, to the north and west by the Mulhouse arrondissement, to the south by Switzerland and to the west by the Territoire de Belfort department.
The arrondissement of Altkirch is the smallest of the arrondissements of the department, with an area of 663.1 km2 (256.0 sq mi), and it is also with fewest people living in it with a population of 69,645 inhabitants and a population density of 105.0 inhabitants/km².[3]
