Thank you today for Thomas F. Mulledy, "the two-time President of Georgetown University, one of the founders of the College of the Holy Cross, and a prominent 19th-century leader of the Jesuits in the United States. He was very cantankerous and was not on good terms with most of his fellow Jesuits. Today, he is most remembered for having been the main actor in the 1838 Jesuit slave sale, in which he sold 272 slaves owned by the Jesuits to pay off Georgetown's debts. This resulted in significant protests at Georgetown and Holy Cross in 2015 and 2016, respectively."! --Gerda Arendt (talk) 06:25, 14 September 2019 (UTC)

Charles H. Stonestreet
As this is a fine article, and is failing due to lack of reviews, I suggest you canvas for wider feedback. Normally that kind of thing is frowned upon on wiki, but not when its constructive and for article improvement. Off the top of my head Gerda Arendt and Tim Riley seem epically suited to suggesting improvements for the page; Gerda because she know the broad topic area, Tim because of his sensitive command of the appropriate language for an article like this. Both are very nice people, and highly approachable. Ceoil (talk) 00:56, 5 October 2019 (UTC)

Editing News #2 – Mobile editing and talk pages – October 2019
Read this in another language • Subscription list for this multilingual newsletter
Inside this newsletter, the Editing team talks about their work on the mobile visual editor, on the new talk pages project, and at Wikimania 2019.
Help
What talk page interactions do you remember? Is it a story about how someone helped you to learn something new? Is it a story about how someone helped you get involved in a group? Something else? Whatever your story is, we want to hear it!
Please tell us a story about how you used a talk page. Please share a link to a memorable discussion, or describe it on the talk page for this project. The team would value your examples. These examples will help everyone develop a shared understanding of what this project should support and encourage.
Talk Pages
The Talk Pages Consultation was a global consultation to define better tools for wiki communication. From February through June 2019, more than 500 volunteers on 20 wikis, across 15 languages and multiple projects, came together with members of the Foundation to create a product direction for a set of discussion tools. The Phase 2 Report of the Talk Page Consultation was published in August. It summarizes the product direction the team has started to work on, which you can read more about here: Talk Page Project project page.
The team needs and wants your help at this early stage. They are starting to develop the first idea. Please add your name to the "Getting involved" section of the project page, if you would like to hear about opportunities to participate.
Mobile visual editor
The Editing team is trying to make it simpler to edit on mobile devices. The team is changing the visual editor on mobile. If you have something to say about editing on a mobile device, please leave a message at Talk:VisualEditor on mobile.
- On 3 September, the Editing team released version 3 of Edit Cards. Anyone could use the new version in the mobile visual editor.
- There is an updated design on the Edit Card for adding and modifying links. There is also a new, combined workflow for editing a link's display text and target.
- Feedback: You can try the new Edit Cards by opening the mobile visual editor on a smartphone. Please post your feedback on the Edit cards talk page.
- In September, the Editing team updated the mobile visual editor's editing toolbar. Anyone could see these changes in the mobile visual editor.
- One toolbar: All of the editing tools are located in one toolbar. Previously, the toolbar changed when you clicked on different things.
- New navigation: The buttons for moving forward and backward in the edit flow have changed.
- Seamless switching: an improved workflow for switching between the visual and wikitext modes.
- Feedback: You can try the refreshed toolbar by opening the mobile VisualEditor on a smartphone. Please post your feedback on the Toolbar feedback talk page.
Wikimania
The Editing Team attended Wikimania 2019 in Sweden. They led a session on the mobile visual editor and a session on the new talk pages project. They tested two new features in the mobile visual editor with contributors. You can read more about what the team did and learned in the team's report on Wikimania 2019.
Looking ahead
- Talk Pages Project: The team is thinking about the first set of proposed changes. The team will be working with a few communities to pilot those changes. The best way to stay informed is by adding your username to the list on the project page: Getting involved.
- Testing the mobile visual editor as the default: The Editing team plans to post results before the end of the calendar year. The best way to stay informed is by adding the project page to your watchlist: VisualEditor as mobile default project page.
- Measuring the impact of Edit Cards: The Editing team hopes to share results in November. This study asks whether the project helped editors add links and citations. The best way to stay informed is by adding the project page to your watchlist: Edit Cards project page.

2019 US Banknote Contest
US Banknote Contest | ||
---|---|---|
November-December 2019 | ||
There are an estimated 30,000 different varieties of United States banknotes, yet only a fraction of these are represented on Wikimedia Commons in the form of 2D scans. Additionally, Colonial America, the Confederate States, the Republic of Texas, multiple states and territories, communities, and private companies have issued banknotes that are in the public domain today but are absent from Commons. In the months of November and December, WikiProject Numismatics will be running a cross-wiki upload-a-thon, the 2019 US Banknote Contest. The goal of the contest is to increase the number of US banknote images available to content creators on all Wikimedia projects. Participants will claim points for uploading and importing 2D scans of US banknotes, and at the end of the contest all will receive awards. Whether you want to claim the Gold Wiki or you just want to have fun, all are invited to participate. If you do not want to receive invitations to future US Banknote Contests, follow the instructions here |

ArbCom 2019 election voter message
Google Code-In 2019 is coming - please mentor some documentation tasks!
Hello,
Google Code-In, Google-organized contest in which the Wikimedia Foundation participates, starts in a few weeks. This contest is about taking high school students into the world of opensource. I'm sending you this message because you recently edited a documentation page at the English Wikipedia.
I would like to ask you to take part in Google Code-In as a mentor. That would mean to prepare at least one task (it can be documentation related, or something else - the other categories are Code, Design, Quality Assurance and Outreach) for the participants, and help the student to complete it. Please sign up at the contest page and send us your Google account address to google-code-in-admins@lists.wikimedia.org, so we can invite you in!
From my own experience, Google Code-In can be fun, you can make several new friends, attract new people to your wiki and make them part of your community.
If you have any questions, please let us know at google-code-in-admins@lists.wikimedia.org.
Thank you!

Message from User:The Rambling Man
TRM has been in touch with me offwiki. He's taking a wikibreak at least and is considering retiring altogether. He asked me to let you know that unfortunately he won't be able to help you with your GA review as promised. I haven't done a GA review before but I'm experienced at FA and confident I can read up, so if you'd like me as an inadequate replacement for TRM's expertise, please do ask. --Dweller (talk) Become old fashioned! 14:53, 5 December 2019 (UTC)
- @Dweller: Thanks for letting me know. I'm sorry to hear that. TRM was an invaluable editor; hopefully, he'll come back one day. If you're interested in tacking a whack at GANs, I have plenty for you. TRM worked through a whole group with me; when I have some time in about a month, I plan on finishing out the remaining Presidents of Georgetown University, which means I'll nominate about 25 GANs. Your help reviewing would be greatly appreciated. (Also, I'm slowly working on getting those GAs to FA; I have one FAC pending now, and once that is done, will nominate another). Ergo Sum 21:15, 5 December 2019 (UTC)
- @Dweller: Perhaps you'd have a chance to give one of the GAs a look. My GANs can be found here, but the ones I prioritize are James A. Ryder and Arthur A. O'Leary, in that order. Ergo Sum 04:09, 2 January 2020 (UTC)
- Hi. I've not been massively active recently. I've just finished a review of one of his GANs and I'll start Ryder next, thanks. --Dweller (talk) Become old fashioned! 10:03, 2 January 2020 (UTC)

Edit-warring on Federalist Society
Your recent editing history shows that you are currently engaged in an edit war; that means that you are repeatedly changing content back to how you think it should be, when you have seen that other editors disagree. To resolve the content dispute, please do not revert or change the edits of others when you are reverted. Instead of reverting, please use the talk page to work toward making a version that represents consensus among editors. The best practice at this stage is to discuss, not edit-war. See the bold, revert, discuss cycle for how this is done. If discussions reach an impasse, you can then post a request for help at a relevant noticeboard or seek dispute resolution. In some cases, you may wish to request temporary page protection.
Being involved in an edit war can result in you being blocked from editing—especially if you violate the three-revert rule, which states that an editor must not perform more than three reverts on a single page within a 24-hour period. Undoing another editor's work—whether in whole or in part, whether involving the same or different material each time—counts as a revert. Also keep in mind that while violating the three-revert rule often leads to a block, you can still be blocked for edit warring—even if you don't violate the three-revert rule—should your behavior indicate that you intend to continue reverting repeatedly.. Snooganssnoogans (talk) 17:18, 21 December 2019 (UTC)
- @Snooganssnoogans: Don't tell me I'm edit warring when I reverted your one edit and then opened a discussion on the talk page that you haven't responded to (diff). Ergo Sum 17:20, 21 December 2019 (UTC)
- How can I respond to a talk page discussion that did not exist before I warned you that you were edit-warring? Snooganssnoogans (talk) 17:23, 21 December 2019 (UTC)
- @Snooganssnoogans: Perhaps that's why when someone says let's take it to the talk page in an edit summary, you either start a talk page discussion yourself or wait more than 30 seconds before posting a block threat on their talk page. Ergo Sum 17:29, 21 December 2019 (UTC)

Comment about an answer at your RfA
Hello, Ergo Sum! Although I have opposed at your RfA, I know you are a valuable editor here and I think you are probably going to pass and get the mop. And I wish you well. I notice that one person (support #76) disagreed with your answer regarding page protection - and they are right, we wouldn't go to "indefinite" after just two short previous protections. Indefinite protection is rare, really a last resort, used after a long series of repeated and increasing protections as noted in the protection log. So I thought you might want to take a look at my essay regarding page protection, User:MelanieN/Page protection. Even if you don't plan to do much page protection, it can be helpful to have some guidelines for when you do. -- MelanieN (talk) 19:28, 20 January 2020 (UTC)

- My recently departed grandfather was a past master of "if there's nothing you can do about it, don't worry about it" style. I guess this is one such moment. The Rambling Man (Staying alive since 2005!) 00:06, 22 January 2020 (UTC)
- I think you will make it. While it would have been optimal to have more "tool" experience, it is good that so many could look at your strong intrinsics (which I don't think anybody denies). You are in a way, the ultimate benchmark of NOBIGDEAL; people forget that while failing editors can roam freely for years in WP, failing admins (i.e. those without strong intrinsics, imho), attract attention quickly – in a way, it is NOBIGDEAL for the community, but ABIGDEAL for the poor admin who attracts such attention. All the best, and I hope it concludes well. Britishfinance (talk) 11:07, 22 January 2020 (UTC)
- I'm glad to see you sticking it out. I know it can be difficult to read that much criticism in one place. I disagree with most of the opposition and you're precisely the type of candidate we need applying for the tools. The focus these days on "admin stats" versus common sense and commitment to the project is bananas. --Laser brain (talk) 13:30, 22 January 2020 (UTC)
- Support what Laser brain said, especially the "common sense" bit. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 13:39, 22 January 2020 (UTC)
- I am pleased to see this RfA is still running, and in particular it was nice to see the consensus leap up from a low of 40% to above 75% where it is right now, and I hope it stays there. Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 14:15, 23 January 2020 (UTC)
- ↑↑↑↑ What they all said. I have absolutely nothing against the 'nuts and bolts'-style candidates that are the norm at RfA, but it's great to see someone who is involved in content creation going for it. We need balance in the admin cadre, not just one style of admin, and your level-headed approach and common sense is just what's needed to add to the mop-holders. I suspect you'll get through now (famous last words!): there are no skeltons in the closet (which is what makes things tank at this stage), and the proportion of "must have stats" vs "no red flags/looks decent enough/nobigdeal/notadick/a positive benefit" won't vary too much. Cheers - SchroCat (talk) 22:05, 23 January 2020 (UTC)
- I'm also glad to see that your patience has been rewarded (knock on wood). I think the vast majority of "opposes" were about various editor's personal hobby-horses rather than actual evaluations of you as an editor or potential administrator. That had to be distressing to read, nonetheless. I look forward to your proving them wrong. Best wishes. Eggishorn (talk) (contrib) 00:15, 25 January 2020 (UTC)
