Regarding edits to Mach Pelican
Thank you for contributing to Wikipedia, Somno! However, your edit here was reverted by an automated bot that attempts to remove spam from Wikipedia. If you were trying to insert a good link, please accept my creator's apologies, but note that the link you added, matching rule blog\.myspace\.com/, is on my list of links to remove and probably shouldn't be included in Wikipedia. Please read Wikipedia's external links guidelines for more information, and consult my list of frequently-reverted sites. For more information about me, see my FAQ page. Thanks! AntiSpamBot 09:52, 6 October 2007 (UTC)
- Today I learnt that a large number of good edits to a page can be reverted simply by including the band's MySpace blog as a reference. Now I know for next time!! Somno 10:03, 6 October 2007 (UTC)
Welcome
Hello, and welcome to Wikipedia! Thank you for your contributions. I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Here are a few good links for newcomers:
- The five pillars of Wikipedia
- How to edit a page
- Help pages
- Tutorial
- How to write a great article
- Manual of Style
Here are some other hints and tips:
- I would recommend that you get a username. You don't have to log in to read or edit articles on Wikipedia, but creating an account is quick, free and non-intrusive, requires no personal information, and there are many benefits of having a username. (If you edit without a username, your IP address is used to identify you instead.)
- When using talk pages, please sign your name at the end of your messages by typing four tildes (~~~~). This will automatically produce your username (or IP address) and the date.
If you have any questions, check out Wikipedia:Where to ask a question, ask me on [[user talk:my Talk page|my talk page]], or type {{helpme}} on this talk page and a user will help you as soon as possible. I will answer your questions as far as I can. Again, welcome!
Thank you again for contributing to Wikipedia. I hope you enjoy editing here and being a Wikipedian.
Just thought you could do with a few pointers and tips to get you started. Welcome, once again, and great to see you around :) Ali K 09:18, 7 October 2007 (UTC)
Another welcome
Welcome from the W.A. crew. Some of the main W.A. contributors are on Wikibreak at the moment, but if you keep editing W.A.-related material you're sure to bump into them sooner or later. You might like to have a look at WP:WA. Hesperian 14:00, 20 October 2007 (UTC)
Vandalism Warning
My additions to The Exorcist (film) were not intended to be vandalism. That story falls under that category of urban legends and is well known around the campus here. Sorry for the misunderstanding. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 150.108.232.35 (talk) 09:42, 30 November 2007 (UTC)
actually i just checked what you changed. I only added the urban legend part. The other thing you deleted wasn't me, I don't know why that happened, maybe it was my roommate. Again, my apologies. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 150.108.232.35 (talk) 09:45, 30 November 2007 (UTC)
Block requests
If you're referring to User:69.248.85.3—who is now blocked—the timing of his edits is why I initially declined to block him. All times UTC:
- 03:53: IP vandalizes Ian Eagle
- 03:54: You give level 2 warning to IP
- 04:00: You give level 3 warning to IP—since this is the first warning that mentions that he may be blocked, this is considered the first "final" warning
- 04:02: You report to AIV
Note that the IP has not made any edits since 03:53—since you warned him with the level 2 warning.
- 04:05: I note at AIV that no vandalism has occurred since the warning, effectively declining the block request (though I leave him listed)
- 04:08: IP vandalizes Brian Scalabrine
- 04:10: I revert vandalism
- 04:11: I consider whether to give a level 4 warning, which specifies that any further vandalism will result in a block. However, given the nature of the vandalism, I go ahead and block him.
That's the key to me, is what has the vandal done since the last edit. I've been known to revert vandalism and leave a level 1 warning. Then, after looking at the users contributions and seeing a pattern, I'll up it to level 2 or 3. I give them the chance to learn from the warning, though. It's only if they continue to vandalize after being warned that I block. (Though every rule has exceptions, and for extremely racist or defamatory vandalism, I will block quicker.) —C.Fred (talk) 04:22, 7 December 2007 (UTC)
- Don't forget that if a page is being targeted for vandalism, you can request page protection. And you know, I thought I saw the same article titles on the new edit history as on the old one. —C.Fred (talk) 04:27, 7 December 2007 (UTC)

Please explain what I did wrong with my last addition of photo archive.

Welcome to the Wikiproject. cygnis insignis 07:39, 11 December 2007 (UTC)
- Thanks for the welcome! I figured since I was adding a new article suggested by the WikiProject, it might make sense to join. :) Somno (talk) 07:47, 11 December 2007 (UTC)
- Yep, that's the rules. :) What is the article? cygnis insignis 07:54, 11 December 2007 (UTC)
- Russell Dumas - I walk past his pavement marker thingy on St Georges Terrace every day, so I figured who better to start an article on him than me? ;) Somno (talk) 08:08, 11 December 2007 (UTC)
- Just read it, excellent subject. Both libraries in the city have a copy of: J.S.H. LePage, Building a State, Water Authority of WA, (Leederville, 1986) ISBN 0-7244-6862-5, it would be sure to have some material to add. I added a tag for the project already, but I will make an edit to the inline citations - see what you think. cygnis insignis 08:15, 11 December 2007 (UTC)
- That is miles better! I'm going to do it that way from now on. Thanks for your help. Somno (talk) 08:29, 11 December 2007 (UTC)

- {{ADB|last= "author last name" |first= "author first name" |authorlink= "author article (optional)" |year= "publish year" |id= "htm page from ADB" |title= "ADB article title" |accessdate= "access date (using YYYY-MM-DD format)"}}
- Having just recommended it, I should start using it myself :P cygnis insignis 08:38, 11 December 2007 (UTC)
- Hi again, regarding [1] West Australian is an accepted phrasing and is interchangable with Western Australian. I thought it 'sounded' better too, am I overlooking something? cygnis insignis 08:38, 12 December 2007 (UTC)
DYK nomination of Russell Dumas
Hi. I've nominated Russell Dumas, an article you worked on, for consideration to appear on the Main Page as part of Wikipedia:Did you know. You can see the hook for the article at Template talk:Did you know#Articles created.2Fexpanded on December 11, where you can improve it if you see fit. Black Falcon (Talk) 23:17, 14 December 2007 (UTC)
An article which you started, or significantly expanded, Russell Dumas, was selected for DYK!
-- Royalbroil 04:28, 16 December 2007 (UTC)
- Yay! Now I really should get onto expanding that article some more. Somno (talk) 00:03, 19 December 2007 (UTC)
Frank Gardner
Saw your comments at Frank Gardner (driver), don't think the bot is wrong. What's happened I think is another editor has decided that another Frank Gardner (a British journalist) is more deserving of the Frank Gardner page than the racing driver Frank Gardner and done a half-assed job of swapping them and not changed the around 100 or so now broken links. Recommend that it all gets restored to where it was yesterday. --Falcadore (talk) 00:44, 28 December 2007 (UTC)
- Thank you, I thought it was unusual that the bot was wrong. Sounds like a good idea. :) Somno (talk) 00:51, 28 December 2007 (UTC)
Your edits are a step forward on the article - have clarified the issue of the intended EP and added some additional references. Dan arndt (talk) 08:08, 3 January 2008 (UTC)
- Thanks Dan. I couldn't find info on the EP so I'm glad you've fixed that bit. :) Somno (talk) 23:20, 3 January 2008 (UTC)

Google Criticism
I assume you removed the paragraph I added about Google. Do you work for Google or own Google stock? There is no doubt that crawling the Texas sex offender database is against its terms of use. It is hard to reference libel without committing the same crime yourself. I would be happy to provide screen shots of the incident I referred to. What if you typed your name into Google and got back results from a sex offender database? It is defamatory for everyone who shares that name. Google is defaming the executives at competing companies. I don't believe this qualifies as do no evil. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 67.169.35.166 (talk) 08:42, 7 January 2008 (UTC)
- Hi. No, I don't work for Google. You can criticise Google all you like, I don't mind or particularly care; the only issue is that everything you add to the encyclopedia (particularly controversial stuff) needs to be sourced from a reliable source. You can add anything, as long as you can back it up. Also, if you check the history of that page, I haven't edited at all, let alone taken out anything you've added. My point was just to remind you to add a reference for your information (i.e. to help you improve the article). Also, please sign your messages on talk pages by typing four tildes (~) after your text - it will add an automatic signature. Hope that helps. Somno (talk) 23:50, 7 January 2008 (UTC)
Vandalism
I don't intend to stop. 91.108.210.124 (talk) 01:01, 10 January 2008 (UTC)
- Okay, then expect people to keep reverting it. Somno (talk) 01:02, 10 January 2008 (UTC)
- Yes I shall, as you should expect me to keep undoing the reverts. 91.108.210.124 (talk) 01:04, 10 January 2008 (UTC)
- Well, at least until you get banned for vandalism. Somno (talk) 01:07, 10 January 2008 (UTC)
- At which point I merely select another IP. 91.108.210.124 (talk) 01:09, 10 January 2008 (UTC)
- Don't you get bored of the pointlessness of it all? Somno (talk) 01:10, 10 January 2008 (UTC)
- Not really no, I don't have anything better to do. 91.108.210.124 (talk) 01:12, 10 January 2008 (UTC)
- That's pretty sad. I hope you find something more constructive to do soon. You know you can make constructive edits to articles as well as vandalise them, right? Might want to consider doing that instead, it's more rewarding. Somno (talk) 01:14, 10 January 2008 (UTC)
- Why is making constructive edits more rewarding? 91.108.232.71 (talk) 01:15, 10 January 2008 (UTC)
- Because you're contributing to bettering a free encyclopedia. It's like donating to charity. Somno (talk) 01:17, 10 January 2008 (UTC)
- I don't find donating to charity particularly fun, I prefer keeping the money myself. If you look at the article I am currently vandalising, then given that I claim to know something about good music, you might appreciate that I feel offended that such an individual is given an article about themselves in this encyclopedia. I would much rather inflict my point of view on such an article than allow it to remain in its current state. That rubbish music of this kind is actually listened to really annoys me. 91.108.255.244 (talk) 01:22, 10 January 2008 (UTC)

Lovely work and thanks. Now all we need is a current day photo which shouldn't be too hard (in theory) as lots of ppl go down that way. I'll leave a note at WT:WA if you like. I reckon it'd be DYK-worthy. —Moondyne 01:14, 11 January 2008 (UTC)
- Thanks for adding it to WT:WA; I haven't seen that page before. I think it's too late for DYK, since I wrote it on 31 December (and unfortunately only investigated the rules for DYK a few days ago). The only photo I know I have of Fonty's Pool is one of me and a whole bunch of family members as kids lined up along the diving board - although funny, it's not really suitable for an encyclopedia. :) Somno (talk) 02:16, 11 January 2008 (UTC)

- If it's a user that has never been warned before, it's good practice to at least warn first with level 2. Admins frown upon less than 3 warnings so starting at 2 then 3 then 4 is 3 warnings so on the 4th violation you can reasonably request a block without actually having to issue a 4th warning. My comment was about your revert in Freddy Newandyke (under another IP address, so I assume you're using another IP address to get around a ban). That had a user-submitted answer to Yahoo! Also, it's not particularly polite to accuse others of being "arrogant" or "cocky" when they're trying to help you understand policy. Somno (talk) 03:27, 24 January 2008 (UTC)
