Barnstar!

The WikiProject Barnstar
I'm not sure what I can contribute to WikiProject Breakfast but I wanted to thank you for inviting me and give you this barnstar for setting it up. You know what they say... breakfast is the most important meal of the day! Stalwart111 12:14, 7 April 2013 (UTC)
Thanks for the star, Stalwart! Cheers, Northamerica1000(talk) 18:26, 7 April 2013 (UTC)
Thank you also for the kind invitation and good luck on your efforts promoting this nice project. Unfortunately some type of code from the invitation made my reply appear in the border rather than the text area so I had to take them out. Δρ.Κ. λόγοςπράξις 19:09, 7 April 2013 (UTC)
Thanks, and thanks for the info. about the template on your talk page. The way your talk page is formatted appears to be the causation. It looks nice, though, with the border and magnification. Cheers, Northamerica1000(talk) 19:13, 7 April 2013 (UTC)
Thank you, I really appreciate your nice comments. :) Cheers, Δρ.Κ. λόγοςπράξις 19:23, 7 April 2013 (UTC)

Hey, looks like a fun project and thanks for the invite. I don't have the free time to participate but I wish you best of luck and every success with it. --Muchness (talk) 22:23, 8 April 2013 (UTC)
Thanks for checking it out, and keep the invitation in mind for future reference. Cheers, Northamerica1000(talk) 22:25, 8 April 2013 (UTC)

You motivated me. Any comments? Cullen328 Let's discuss it 03:00, 8 April 2013 (UTC)

Hurrah, another notable topic now covered in the encyclopedia! I've added some portals and the new {{Breakfast topics}} navigation box to the article. Northamerica1000(talk) 20:49, 8 April 2013 (UTC)
Update: I've added some images, an external links section with a link to the category commons:Category:Breakfast in Israel and added some internal links. Northamerica1000(talk) 23:36, 8 April 2013 (UTC)
I really appreciate the additions you made, and the images add a lot. I am weak at processing DYK nominations, and am busy the next few days. If you want to do it, we can share the brownie points. Thank you. Cullen328 Let's discuss it 03:55, 9 April 2013 (UTC)
Thanks, and per your suggestion, I've nominated the article for DYK. See: Template:Did you know nominations/Israeli breakfast. Cheers, Northamerica1000(talk) 07:25, 9 April 2013 (UTC)

Thank you for the offer, and I accept. It would be wonderful to have help, especially from an experienced editor such as yourself. Also, I would like to invite you to join the WikiProject once it is up an running, as you would be a wonderful candidtaenfor the program. I am looking forward to your help, and to working with you.  Done. The project has been created, see: Wikipedia:WikiProject Breakfast. Northamerica1000(talk) 02:35, 6 April 2013 (UTC)
You might want to take look at Category:WikiProject Breakfast articles. I may have made bit of a mess. AutomaticStrikeout (TCSign AAPT) 03:08, 6 April 2013 (UTC)
To retain correctness in the page's formatting, I've reverted your addition to Category:WikiProject Breakfast articles for the time being. Perhaps some fixes at the page you created, Template:WPBreakfast assessment level category-main, would correct this matter. Northamerica1000(talk) 03:33, 6 April 2013 (UTC)
I really don't know and it's rather late for me to be trying to figure out complicated coding. Perhaps you could ask someone at WP:VPT as they will find the problem quicker than I will. Sorry, I guess in a little too far over my head. AutomaticStrikeout (TCSign AAPT) 03:37, 6 April 2013 (UTC)

WikiProject Breakfast

Thanks for the invite. I may not be choose to be active in it, but your invite got me to thinking about how i want to involve myself in food related articles. hmm, chocolate, bread, cheese, fruit... However, i MUST alert you to the following CFD at [1]: Category:Breakfast foods is up for discussion, and is looking like a deletion. You should chime in. I am going to stay out for now, not sure what i think yet.Mercurywoodrose (talk) 01:23, 13 April 2013 (UTC)

Thanks for the note, and for the discussion notice. Cheers, Northamerica1000(talk) 01:25, 13 April 2013 (UTC)
OK, im interested in working on a Task Force devoted to Chocolate. I like the subject, am reasonably knowledgeable, am pretty much done fixing up the Wikipedia:San Francisco Bay Area Task Force. by my count, there are up to 867 chocolate related articles (less due to multiple categorization). that makes it easy to manage and well defined. How would i go about this? I am also mentioning this at the food and drink project.Mercurywoodrose (talk) 03:47, 13 April 2013 (UTC)

Breakfast

Sure, thanks. But there is a major problem. I really don´t know where to find some usefull refs for, let us say Tunisian breakfast... Most people surely know what they eat for breakfast... now don´t they:)? But whoever is publishing books om ..breakfast? It is kind of common knowledge ideed. It is something people do every day. That is why I think that all the stuff that has been deleted from the article is probably true, though unsourced nor referenced. Tricky.

Adding the WP:Breakfast banner

May I suggest tasking a bot to do this? It can hit all articles in a specific category and pull the assessment from other banners. WP:Botreq. --Jeremy (blah blahI did it!) 05:34, 14 April 2013 (UTC)

That would be great. I have done this before when I started WP:BRANDS. It was time-consuming for that project because there are a lot of brand-related articles on Wikipedia. For WP:Breakfast it seems that it would be an easier task to accomplish. Feel free to initiate it. Perhaps continue this conversation on the project's talk page. A question

Hello,

Seeing that you have been talking about the Peer review part of TAFI, I noticed that I still had no idea what it was exactly for, and how it could be any different from what we already have.

So could you just clarify what do you mean by Peer Review?

Thanks, TheOriginalSoni (talk) 13:11, 17 April 2013 (UTC)

An idea is to change the name of the page to "Project collaborations", along with the tabbed header entry for the page. Northamerica1000(talk) 13:12, 17 April 2013 (UTC)
I've boldly renamed the page to Article collaboration; the title is clearer as to the purpose of the page. Northamerica1000(talk) 13:16, 17 April 2013 (UTC)
But the question is "What will it achieve?" Will all pertinent discussions for the 10 articles be outsourced here? TheOriginalSoni (talk) 13:16, 17 April 2013 (UTC)
The page simply provides a space for collaboration. One potential achievement is providing a space for article improvements after entries have concluded in the schedule. The provision of said space for collaboration is in unison with the Wikimedia Foundation's goals of encouraging editor participation. Northamerica1000(talk) 13:20, 17 April 2013 (UTC)
Alright. So it is like a follow up for our articles. Like making sure they go to GA status? TheOriginalSoni (talk) 14:23, 17 April 2013 (UTC)
Absolutely; a space for enabling such collaborations. Northamerica1000(talk) 14:38, 17 April 2013 (UTC)
Got it! TheOriginalSoni (talk) 14:47, 17 April 2013 (UTC)
  • I have made this banner for helping advertising of TAFI. Please tell me how it looks.

User:TheOriginalSoni/TAFI ad box TheOriginalSoni (talk) 14:23, 17 April 2013 (UTC)

Alright. TheOriginalSoni (talk) 13:53, 22 April 2013 (UTC)
  • I am of the opinion that the current tabbed header template contains too many links, and must minimise the links to not confuse any new collaborator. As it currently stands, the Article Collaboration section remains unused, and I would like it to be removed for now. So would you be open to having it removed just from the header for the time being. I'm perfectly open to re-adding this section if it looks like TAFI is developed enough to actually require the section [Which looks a bit far to me right now, given the number of changes we are going through] TheOriginalSoni (talk) 23:34, 26 April 2013 (UTC)
I prefer to retain the Article collaboration page, to encourage people to collaborate on Wikipedia articles. Perhaps bring this proposal to the TAFI talk page. Cheers, Northamerica1000(talk) 00:42, 27 April 2013 (UTC)
I preferred to bring it up to you directly as you were the one involved with this idea, and if you agreed to it, that was jumping through a lot of loops. No problem. We keep that page on the header. :) TheOriginalSoni (talk) 00:59, 27 April 2013 (UTC)

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. Advice on deletion of article

Hi Northamerica1000

I would like your input on deletion of the article on NZ band, Katango (deleted dec 2012). I wrote the initial article and since then have found more information that covers the notability:music requirements (which I can provide citations for..) Namely: - nominated for 2x NZ Music Awards 1985 (most promising male vocalist and most promising group) - has won a major NZ music competition - has featured in multiple national TV broadcast segments (at least 3, but I can only cite 3) - performed on a notable TV program (NZ Telethon)

If these don't make a band notable (at least in a NZ sense) then so be it. I also have more references for the records produced (from the NZ National Library) ThanksGmoney484 (talk) 04:44, 25 April 2013 (UTC)

Hello Gmoney484: My editing time is less lately, but if you have a link to a draft I could check it out and critique. Cheers, Northamerica1000(talk) 23:37, 26 April 2013 (UTC)

Thanks for the reply. Hope this works.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Gmoney484/sandbox Gmoney484 (talk) 09:34, 27 April 2013 (UTC)

  • Hello Gmoney484: I've searched around for sources, but not having much luck. The link you provided in the article to the National Library of New Zealand is a good start. The links therein have links to articles published about this band by Auckland star and New Zealand Herald, but I can't access the articles nor find them at this time on internet searches. I'll continue to search in my free time. Per your information above about awards received by the group, it's possible that they could meet point #9 of WP:NBAND, and per the performances you mentioned, the band may pass point #10 of WP:NBAND, so there is potential here. Northamerica1000(talk) 12:35, 28 April 2013 (UTC)

Portal:Coffee

I know its not kosher, but i AFD'd it to show that i recognize the reasons for CSD, and also to get more attention. personally, i think its a fine portal "stub", im just not sure how portals are created, and what level of support they need to be created/maintained. thanks for the support.Mercurywoodrose (talk) 19:29, 27 April 2013 (UTC)

If it's retained, I'm planning on improving it by adding more entries for each of its sections, a purge function, etc. Northamerica1000(talk) 00:43, 28 April 2013 (UTC)
I've begun expanding the portal; hopefully it doesn't disappear. Northamerica1000(talk) 01:50, 28 April 2013 (UTC)
Thanks, seems like such an easy, simple portal, wont need a lot of attention. And i dont even drink the stuff! (i did meet alfred peet, though).Mercurywoodrose (talk) 05:45, 28 April 2013 (UTC)

G13

Are you quite sure you want to use it while the scope is still awaiting discussion? If you do, perhaps it might be better to first do it on things that could not conceivably be notable. Theee are plenty of them. DGG ( talk ) 18:21, 24 April 2013 (UTC)

Hello DGG: After checking out Wikipedia talk:Criteria for speedy deletion#Proposed new criterion: abandoned article drafts, I'll be certainly be taking your advice into consideration. One merit of the process is that when using Twinkle, article refunds are offered to editors whose articles are nominated for deletion under G13 (for an example, see User talk:Friends of Hope#Your article submission Hope in a bottle). Northamerica1000(talk) 23:04, 26 April 2013 (UTC)
What I am doing is going first for things that should be deleted on the other speedy criteria, mainly G11, and mainly the very worst of them, that we would not want to offer REFUND automatically. The absolute worst I have been deleting single-handed, although I usually dislike doing this--the ones just one step up or where I might not understand the topic I nominate for CSD. I need to see what happens if two criteria are checked. My own actual preference would be to have nothing to do with the current afc process, & replace it with something that would be easier to audit. As a fix, subject categories would help-- but I think it is so irrationally designed--including the original idea to do it in WP space that we'd do better designing from scratch without preconceptions. DGG ( talk ) 21:17, 27 April 2013 (UTC)
It would certainly take some time and effort to reconfigure Wikipedia:Articles for creation and Wikipedia:WikiProject Articles for creation, that's for sure. Northamerica1000(talk) 02:07, 29 April 2013 (UTC)
Not reconfigure, design a project to accomplish, this, preferably under a different name to escape the odium of the old one. I am working on a proposal. The basic organizing principle will be that all new articles will come in a single pathway where they can be seen and examined; the structure is based upon the steps prescribed by the one good component, the Article Wizard. It will also have some elements from the Incubator. DGG ( talk ) 02:12, 29 April 2013 (UTC)
Interesting, a new project. Hey, I have some experience in designing WikiProjects, recruiting for members by sending out select invitations to editors that are likely to be interested per their editing history, etc., so keep me in mind when your proposal goes live. My editing time varies more lately, but I'm still around. Northamerica1000(talk) 02:18, 29 April 2013 (UTC)
I will certainly ask your help--I am much more willing in concocting schemes than in actually getting them to work. But it will only be useful if it replace existing methods--I would not want to add yet another complicated set of procedures to WP. DGG ( talk ) 06:12, 29 April 2013 (UTC)
Yes, the page curation was designed quite well. I had my doubts about it at first, but it was a good job in the end, because, unlike AfC, those working on it were sensitive to the requests of other editors; they encouraged feedback, and they used it. In order to prevent bad articles getting into WP from AfC ,the easiest way would be to feed them all into NPP. I've suggested this in the past--it would have to be able to capture the moves, and it probably should be done to capture all moves from WP, WPT, user, or usertalk space into mainspace. Unfortunately, that's the easiest part of the problem. The real difficulty is to rescue the fixable articles in AfC from the people who unreasonably reject them or give bad advice about them and discourage the contributors. We know how to deal with unacceptable articles--we've gotten very good in the last 5 years in keeping them out of wp ; but we do not know how to deal with new good faith users. DGG ( talk ) 05:25, 30 April 2013 (UTC)

Talkbacks

Please do not continue to add talkbacks on my user talk page concerning the inappropriate tagging discussion. I am aware of the discussion and will participate when I have something to say, which will probably not be until a proper community-wide RfC is opened, since the current discussion cannot generate the consensus necessary, as the project has no authority to do so. Beyond My Ken (talk) 04:51, 30 April 2013 (UTC)

Thanks for advising that you're aware of the discussion at Wikipedia talk:Today's articles for improvement. I still find it troubling and inappropriate that you're unilaterally removing the template from articles despite consensus that was attained for it to be used. Actually, one RFC has already occurred in which use of Template:TAFI on articles was mentioned there by User:David Levy in the TAFI moving forward? subsection, but nobody objected (see Talk:Main Page/Archive 173#Today's article for improvement on the Main Page). Also, in a discussion previous to the above, there was consensus to use the template (See: Wikipedia:Village pump (proposals)/Archive 98#Unanswered questions - TAFI). I love how you dig up a ton of sources, but can't be bothered to add them to the article. Same thing happens all the time. "Oh, keep, lots of sources." But then six years later, the article is still more [citation needed] than content. Ten Pound Hammer(What did I screw up now?) 17:33, 28 April 2013 (UTC)

Thanks for adding some sources to the Pocket pet article. Northamerica1000(talk) 02:04, 29 April 2013 (UTC)
Now that the AfD discussion has concluded, I've added more sources and inline citations to the article, along with an image. Feel free to improve it more! Northamerica1000(talk) 01:09, 5 May 2013 (UTC)

Please stop working on it for a few days, it appears to be on the way to keep and if that is the case I want it to run as smooth as possible and make sure it fits with in the F&D family. I will redo so it uses the proper format and templates. Your going to a series of moves and other stuff that is going to mess it up while I am working on it, so do not think I am trying to damage it or anything.

You're putting way too much work in to it. --Jeremy (blah blahI did it!) 03:41, 29 April 2013 (UTC)

It is strange to be asked to cease working on a portal by you, because you initially blanked all of its pages and nominated them all for speedy deletion. This request is also strange because you have !voted at its deletion discussion to have it deleted. It's a standalone portal; there's no need for it to "fit into" other content on Wikipedia other than those that are coffee-related.
Regarding the use of "proper" format and templates; portals can vary in terms of style and layout to some degree. There's no need for them all to appear identical.
Please do not revert all of my improvements to the portal, especially since it's currently listed for deletion, and again, because you have !voted to have it removed from the encyclopedia. I'm also concerned about your statement of redoing it, because of concerns that this will entail the removal of positive expansions that I have performed to better the portal's coverage of coffee-related topics.
Rather than changing everything, perhaps consider working collaboratively on it and discuss your proposed changes. Northamerica1000(talk) 04:54, 29 April 2013 (UTC)
Could you please let me finish, then you can come in and see what I have done.
As I stated I realize that the direction of the discussion is leaning towards keep, so I acknowledging that and trying to bring it up to standards and structure of the other portals across Wikipedia. As to your improvements, I am simplifying them to use the standard templates developed for portals, as I stated you are doing more work than required because there are tools that are designed to simplify the process.
Assume good faith, this isn't my first time at the rodeo as I have experience doing this. There are standard templates that are here on Wikipedia designed to simplify the creation of portals, which you may not be aware of. I am not touching content, only the underlying structure that the content is in so that it uses the various templates people have created for this very purpose. Some moves I have made are designed with these templates in mind. Chill, let me do this - I only want to help since this is appears to be staying around. --Jeremy (blah blahI did it!) 05:40, 29 April 2013 (UTC)
Quick reply: I'm aware of the templates (see Category:Wikipedia Portal templates), and I've updated the pages accordingly while also retaining the portal's current layout and style. Northamerica1000(talk) 05:43, 29 April 2013 (UTC)
I haven't changed the style, just the structure. You have changed the style from the original. --Jeremy (blah blahI did it!) 06:00, 29 April 2013 (UTC)
Check out the page now; the links at the bottom of each section are all standardized per updating with various portal templates on subpages. Let's work together and improve the portal. Northamerica1000(talk) 06:01, 29 April 2013 (UTC)
Have to do homework. I'll do some more tomorrow regarding page templates. The one thing I wish to say is let's keep a standard look for all five drink portals. (P:Beer, P:Coffee, P:Drink, P:Wine and of course P:Food).--Jeremy (blah blahI did it!) 06:13, 29 April 2013 (UTC)
I hear you; the thing is, though, is that I like the current layout of Portal:Coffee. I think the portal has significant potential with its current layout, which is nice and streamlined, providing instant content. Some of the other food-related portals (e.g. P:Drink, P:Beer) have a great deal of excessive spacing and smallish images, which may detract from viewership. While the images could be incorporated into the templates in the Coffee portal, I sort of like them centered and somewhat larger than at other portals. It provides eye-appeal, which can correspond with higher readership and page views. Northamerica1000(talk) 06:18, 29 April 2013 (UTC)
I mean the basics, the headings, box formats etc. Where stuff is located is fine, that is not a big deal for me. If you wish to tweak the other portals to look more like this, feel free. I don't have an issue with that, however, some are more complex than this one and have a lot more sections. --Jeremy (blah blahI did it!) 06:24, 29 April 2013 (UTC)
All right, cool. Thanks for providing your input and perspective. Cheers, Northamerica1000(talk) 06:32, 29 April 2013 (UTC)
Don't really mean to eavesdrop, but i wanted to let you know that i improved the categorization at the Commons for Coffee, which i think is helpful when trying to get a portal improved. and, uh, great work, i really only did the absolute bare minimum to allow it to exist, you folks just took off on this one, which is great. I likely wont be that involved long term with it, but I would be happy to add the portal link to more of the coffee related articles, if you tell me how you are moving through the category tree to add it, and where you left off.Mercurywoodrose (talk) 16:00, 29 April 2013 (UTC)
Adding more portal links to high-relevance articles would be great; I've performed some of this myself. I didn't work from any category trees in doing this, so perhaps just add the portal link to high relevance articles that you come across. Northamerica1000(talk) 16:36, 5 May 2013 (UTC)
I will probably do that over time. looking good.Mercurywoodrose (talk) 06:04, 6 May 2013 (UTC)
Thanks, because building the encyclopedia with internal links is functional toward interweaving related topics in the encyclopedia. Northamerica1000(talk) 10:53, 6 May 2013 (UTC)

Template:Expand article

Hi Northamerica1000. I'm sorry I didn't get back to you in time at the deletion discussion for {{expand article}}. I was indeed mistaken in that there are cases where that template could've been useful beyond {{more footnotes}}; I personally think many Further reading entries are just references waiting to happen, but I know that's not always the case. Oh well. I'm sure the template will reappear if it's missed. --BDD (talk) 17:57, 29 April 2013 (UTC)

  • Oh well. Per the Deletion discussion, it likely won't ever be back. Too late now, but that's the way it goes. Using {{incomplete}} suffices in Further reading sections, but expand further had more precise wording, actually stating that articles had potential to be expanded. Hopefully people won't just skim over Further reading sections now, like they're just insignificant lists without purpose. Northamerica1000(talk) 01:53, 30 April 2013 (UTC)
Yes, it was a very bad decision to delete that template, and if I think there were any hope, I would revisit it. In fact, I am so willing to get it reconsidered that if anyone wants to seriously propose it, please let me know so I can give it the strongest support I can DGG ( talk ) 03:27, 30 April 2013 (UTC)
DGG: Here's an example of what using the {{incomplete}} template as a replacement for Template:Expand article appears when used in Further reading sections in articles: Pocket pet. The Expand further template was worded much more precisely and worked well. If you're interested in initiating a deletion review, please notify me. Northamerica1000(talk) 16:45, 5 May 2013 (UTC)

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited List of restaurant chains, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Wienerwald (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

This is an automated message from MadmanBot. I have performed a search with the contents of List of fermented foods, and it appears to be very similar to another Wikipedia page: Category:Fermented foods. It is possible that you have accidentally duplicated contents, or made an error while creating the page— you might want to look at the pages and see if that is the case. If you are intentionally trying to rename an article, please see Help:Moving a page for instructions on how to do this without copying and pasting. If you are trying to move or copy content from one article to a different one, please see Wikipedia:Copying within Wikipedia and be sure you have acknowledged the duplication of material in an edit summary to preserve attribution history.

It is possible that the bot is confused and found similarity where none actually exists. If that is the case, you can remove the tag from the article. MadmanBot (talk) 01:43, 15 May 2013 (UTC)

Energetically modified cement

Thank you for placing the wikiproject civil engineering and chemistry marker onto the talk page of energetically modified cement. I note your interest in sustainability. Note the page is still being written and I hope to cover the sustainability significance of EMC - especially in the context of the Western US where EMC has achieved very significant results using Natural Pozzolans, as discussed briefly on the page already. As you may know, by comparison the Western US is "floating" on the stuff, meanwhile California is running out of limestone and has to import fly ash (e.g. from Japan) on account of its lack of coal-fired power stations. Again, thank you. Regards Jono2013 (talk) 14:26, 5 May 2013 (UTC)

Thanks for the information, and I'll try to help out to improve the article here and there. You convinced the nominator of the deletion discussion to withdraw at the article's AfD nomination, and have created and significantly expanded the article. Thanks for improving the encyclopedia, and welcome to Wikipedia. Northamerica1000(talk) 15:07, 7 May 2013 (UTC)
Thank you for taking time working on the article. Just to let you know the standardized nomenclature for the page for the sake of consistency, precision and academic credibility:
1. If referring to one energetically modified cement, please feel free to use "EMC"
2. If referring to more than one, then use the pluralized full name "energetically modified cements" so that it is clear we are referring to the plural.
The is because some aspects discussed are "general", other times specific, and it is important to maintain that precision for the articles credibility viz. the "big hitters" in the academic world who "know their potatoes". I hope this assists.
I do not right now want to be drawn into a discussion of the user that posted it for deletion, other than to state I am very concerned he/she maybe a competing academic/a fully-paid up member of the Portland cement industry, or even worse. That user only joined on 26 April well after the page was published, and has developed a near fixation of placing damaging banners on the page. What is more he/she keeps acting without any discussion first, notwithstanding I am a novice user to wiki and the page is WIP. I am a retired senior academic (life sciences) who has a keen amateurs eye (in the Victorian sense) for something which I think is significant and well worth a credible "shout" on here. And I went "out on a limb" to convince a number of academics to assist me - and damaging banners cause enormous embarrassment to my endeavors, when i have nothing but the best intentions.
Put simply, the World should have the right to learn about EMC, it is that significant in my view. And this is where Wiki is at its strongest. Back to what encyclopedias should be about - rather than tittle tattle and personality promotion.
This is an article in the "good old fashioned" sense. But it is also significant because it is catching the tide of where the "smart brains" are moving in advanced material sciences: Supplemental Cementitious Materials. It's the future for concrete - i'm convinced of it. Portland cement (an old technology) has had its day in terms of utter domination. We are living in exciting times - if you believe that science can make a contribution towards reducing CO2 and energy consumption. This article is reflecting that "cusp". And the more people assess it for themselves, the better.

List of cheeses

You may have noticed we are both editing here (and hello again, from the lands of cheese, coffee and chocolate, and breakfast). I had removed the link to Cuisine of Japan, as it doesnt mention cheese much. I won't revert back to my change, as since we have a difference about these links, perhaps someone else could chime in. If you do feel strongly about keeping those in, i wont change back, but for the record, i think its a bit of a stretch to link to cuisine articles with little or no cheese content. of course, then all the european cuisine articles can stay. again, i wont edit war with you, as we are pretty much in agreement that the food articles need so much work, why quabble? thanks for your part in this effort. This SHOULD be a featured list, esp. if each cheese has a summary as you are providing. thats a LOT of work, though.Mercurywoodrose (talk) 07:23, 7 May 2013 (UTC)

Hello Mercurywoodrose: Yes, I noticed your improvements to the article, which are appreciated. The thing about the cuisine article links is that cheese is often a significant part of cuisine in general, and the links provide useful links to high-relevance related topics. For example, cheese is often served as an appetizer, served along with wine, used in main dishes and side dishes, and even used in some desserts (e.g. cannoli). I didn't notice that you removed the Japanese cuisine link, and recently added it because I thought I missed it. At any rate, I welcome collaboration to work on the page!
Also, I maintain a list of food article collaborations at User:Northamerica1000/Food articles. Please feel free to contribute to the list and work on articles listed therein (just please sign any entries/comments, etc. if you add any). Cheers, Northamerica1000(talk) 07:31, 7 May 2013 (UTC)

Thank you for "Original Barnstar" designation

Thank you so kindly for the designation, which i've only just seen, in respect of the Energetically modified cement page. So please forgive my torpor in responding. Thank you again, it has allowed a sense of pride.

Kind regards Jono2013 (talk) 10:36, 8 May 2013 (UTC)

Thanks again for improving Energetically modified cement. FYI, a barnstar is not particularly a designation; it's just an award for your determined work on the article. Thanks again for working to improve the encyclopedia! Northamerica1000(talk) 12:29, 9 May 2013 (UTC)

Hi there: Just to let you know that I have significantly added-to the EMC page. Ive added external links, copious notes, more references, and a further reading section. The notes are important to add important details which substantiate the article in key aspects, but nevertheless is text which, strictly speaking, is perhaps "a little too much information" for inclusion into the main text of the article per se. In particular, Ive significantly modified the sections "History and recognition", "EMC activation and Portland cement replacement-capabilities" and "Energy and carbon dioxide savings". Into the latter section I have added a table in order to contextualize the potential savings, especially for the "first time reader" who may not be aware of the scale of Global Portland cement production and how replacing it can have certain effects in these areas. I consider this so important, that I've taken time to "read" the results, in order to explain what they represent - and also added an explanatory note (note 5).

It's still WIP. I am thinking of adding a section on sustainability - but this needs care. Particularly pertinent in this regard, are the water-saving features by using EMCs, as compared to the water requirements for making concretes with only Portland cement as the cementitious material. I'll be giving this some more thought over the next few days and will let you know.

template redudant?

I'm not sure what the template {{Drinking games}} is good for if you've made List of drinking games.Curb Chain (talk) 07:09, 16 May 2013 (UTC)

  • The template can be used in articles other than drinking game ones (e.g. game-related, alcohol related, etc.) Also per WP:NOTDUP, "It is neither improper nor uncommon to simultaneously have a category, a list, and a navigation template which all cover the same topic. These redundant systems of organizing information are considered to be complementary, not inappropriately duplicative." Northamerica1000(talk) 08:38, 16 May 2013 (UTC)
Those are unrelated. Games are generally games and not drinking games unless you make it some sort of penalty to drink when you lose a game.Curb Chain (talk) 00:31, 17 May 2013 (UTC)
I tend to view drinking games as a type of game. For example, there are board games, card games, dice games, drinking games, etc. Northamerica1000(talk) 04:27, 17 May 2013 (UTC)
Well, let's use the template to list games that do have something related to alcohol in reliable sources.Curb Chain (talk) 05:14, 17 May 2013 (UTC)

Possible collaboration on a hunger portal?

North, thanks so much for the barnstar for the school breakfast club article. And thanks for further improving it by adding portals. You got me thinking, would you be up for helping me create a portal for Hunger relief? There's tens of millions of people engaged in fighting hunger, though not many of seem to contribute our coverage here. I guess that sort of person is often repelled by the senseless destruction of information and personal attacks that are too common on Wikipedia. People like yourself, Dream and the Colonel, who combine good nature with scholarly ability and heroic resilience, are all too rare. Anyway, I could create a user sub page with most of the prose and give it basic structure (classes of food aid agency, NGOs, multilaterals, international summits, global campaigns, etc etc.) and then perhaps you could help to format it and make any other improvements? It wouldn't need to have too many harrowing images, actually the best social media experts seem to think that's counter productive. We could have relatively pleasant pics as in Hunger in the United States. I noticed editor Amadscientist has joined your breakfast project. He's a talented photographer and if we ask could probably get us some excellent images.

Anyway its just a thought, no worries if this isnt a topic you'd want to work on. I hadnt really noticed portals before, but am quite excited about their potential. I could probably do all the formatting etc myself if need be. Thanks again for the barnstar and your own fantastic work for the encyclopedia. FeydHuxtable (talk) 12:37, 18 May 2013 (UTC)

Go for it. I have significant experience building and expanding portals, and can certainly help out. One of the key aspects of portals is that they can have several selected images, selected articles, selected biographies, Did you know's, etc., in which new selections can be viewed using the purge option (typically with a link included directly below the header in portals). For an example, see Portal:Global warming, one that I significantly expanded a while back. Creating a subpage of your user page with the following information would be most helpful, and again multiple entries would be great.
  • Selected articles
  • Selected images; panorama images
  • Selected biographies
  • General topic list (mandatory) (somewhat optional, but highly preferred)
  • Web resources (high-relevance external links, preferably academic or non-profit) (optional, but preferred)
  • Did you know entries (optional, but preferred, these do not have to be from Wikipedia's DYK)
It's typically preferred that articles are at Good article or Featured article designation, and that images are Featured-class, but for many topics this is just not a reality. (E.g. at Portal:Ecology; many ecological-related articles don't receive a great deal of contributions). Northamerica1000(talk) 12:57, 18 May 2013 (UTC)
Thanks North. I hadnt picked up on most of those aspects. A lot of the hunger related articles aren't even up to C class unfortunately. It might be a good few weeks before I have a draft portal ready. I'll let you know! FeydHuxtable (talk) 13:45, 18 May 2013 (UTC)

Editing templates used in multiple projects.

I understand you want to make improvements, but you should not make changes to templates that are used in multiple projects without discussing the changes. You should also notify any project that uses the template before your changes are implemented. Setup a sandbox and make the changes there, make the proposal and then discuss. See WP:BRD.

Also, remember that you will need a consensus of projects involved and a consensus is more than three or four people participating in the discussion. --Jeremy (blah blahI did it!) 17:26, 20 May 2013 (UTC)

The usual convention for editing one's comments after saving them is to use strikethrough, not to remove them. Doing that gives the impression that you're trying to hide something.  The Potato Hose  20:23, 20 May 2013 (UTC)

I know. Since you removed my outdent in another discussion, rather than striking it through, perhaps consider taking some of your own advice! (sarcasm) . Don't fret, though, I appreciate your advice, even though I just met you. Hey, we're both interested in food topics, so let's work together, if possible. I checked out your to-do page, and I also have one at User:Northamerica1000/Article collaboration which is mostly comprised of food topics at this time (check it out). I specialize in article improvements, expansions, source citing using empirical research (when available) and other such matters. Northamerica1000(talk) 20:46, 20 May 2013 (UTC)
Uh, there's a major difference between removing a small cosmetic convention, and actually altering the meaning and content of what someone has said. You know that, so how about you dial it back a little, ok? I don't think we're interested in the same subject areas, or in attacking them the same way (at the moment I'm basically believing in a bottom-up approach; regularizing and tidying up our article assessments, then pushing articles up in quality from the bottom). But I certainly won't object to running into you, and I do have some ideas about getting WP:FOOD more active and having ongoing collaborations--"Expand a Stub Week" or "Let's get 10 C-Class articles to GAN in one month" or whatever, but I'm still noodling on how that could work. — The Potato Hose 22:03, 20 May 2013 (UTC)
I only copy edited my own comments. This is allowed, per common sense. I never alter other people's comments; that is wrong, and also rude. I also have some ideas to improve WP:FOOD, so don't hesitate to contact me. Cheers, Northamerica1000(talk) 22:16, 20 May 2013 (UTC)
Copyediting is not the same as completely changing what you have said by removing large chunks. I could also show the diffs from your multiple 'copyediting' bits at WT:FOOD, but I think you're getting the point: copyediting comments for spelling errors, grammar, or increased clarity is very much allowed. Wholesale removal (or addition) of text, changing the meaning of what you wrote, is not. Nothing gets on my nerves more than someone being disingenuous, especially when it looks like barring that disingenuousness I would probably respect the person in question. You know that mass addition to or removal from your comments after posting them is really frowned on, especially when others have already responded, and I know you know that. So stop, okay? It's not helping anyone. — The Potato Hose 22:29, 20 May 2013 (UTC)
See? What you did there when you ec'd me yet again because you're not taking time to read carefully before hitting save? That was copyediting. You were increasing clarity. You did not change the meaning of what you wrote. — The Potato Hose 22:29, 20 May 2013 (UTC)
You seem combative at this time, and are severely exaggerating the gravitas of simple edits to my own comments performed in good faith. Sometimes people change their minds. Perhaps you should take a break from commenting here; perhaps work to improve some articles instead. I tend to focus more upon article improvements and expansions, rather than examining people's diffs and scolding them ad infinitum. Northamerica1000(talk) 22:33, 20 May 2013 (UTC)
When your editing gives the appearance of trying to hide something, when your editing is changing the meaning of what you said after other people have responded, yes, you are going to be scolded. The simplest solution is to stop doing those things... which, given that I have ec'd again while trying to respond to you, doesn't really seem to be a solution you're interested in pursuing. Have some consideration for your fellow editors. — The Potato Hose 22:41, 20 May 2013 (UTC)
Appearance versus intent. My intent is to provide intelligent commentary. Sometimes people edit their comment to improve them; the intent. Please don't be upset, and assume good faith. Thank you in advance for your consideration. Northamerica1000(talk) 22:58, 20 May 2013 (UTC)
Eh, you haven't bothered responding substantively to any other point I've raised, so I suppose I shouldn't have expected any different here. — The Potato Hose 23:02, 20 May 2013 (UTC)
Sure I have. See Template talk:Project assessments and Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Food and drink#Proposal: Enlarge the article statistics section. You seem to assume that articles statistics in projects are going to disappear all of the sudden; this won't occur, and you're expecting response to your speculation in those discussions. Of course, when I predict that "this won't occur", this is also speculation. Northamerica1000(talk) 23:55, 20 May 2013 (UTC)

No, you haven't. Let me try again: why do any cosmetic changes matter at all when the template is unusable as-is, and there is no idea when, if ever, it will be usable again? — The Potato Hose 00:10, 21 May 2013 (UTC)

Article statistics are temporarily down at this time, but not permanently. Don't worry so much about temporary outages in them. See also: User:Theopolisme's response at Template talk:Project assessments. Article statistics aren't going to leave Wikipedia. Updating the template to a standard point size, or at least a slightly larger one, is congruent with enabling contributions to the encyclopedia; tiny point sizes that aren't easily read are typically skimmed over or ignored. I hope this helps to answer your concerns. Northamerica1000(talk) 00:26, 21 May 2013 (UTC)
Fact: Article statistics are down and have been for some time.
Fact: It is not known when or if they will be back up.
Given the above facts, and not speculation or gazing into the future, why do any cosmetic changes matter at all until one or both of those facts change? — The Potato Hose 00:33, 21 May 2013 (UTC)
I've already responded here and at both of the discussion linked above, so there's no need to reiterate again here ad infinitum. The stats are just temporarily down. If you don't agree with improving the template, that's fine. You've stated your opinion: don't improve it, because there's no guarantee when the statistics will be available again. Dude, chill. Northamerica1000(talk) 00:41, 21 May 2013 (UTC)
'Responded' isn't the same as 'answered the question.' Someone arguing in good faith would answer the question, or show a diff where they answered it. I have never said whether I agree or disagree about your desired changes to the template. I have said, and I will say again, and you have not refuted this point even once: there is no point discussing cosmetic changes to a template that does not work and has no timeline on when it will work again. You have not addressed that point. I have asked you address that point. If you want me to AGF, you have to act as though you deserve it. For example, by directly answering direct questions. — The Potato Hose 01:03, 21 May 2013 (UTC)
Dude, chill (#2). Your interrogative approach is concerning, and is becoming disruptive. You don't agree with my stance. That's fine. Leave it at that. People aren't obligated to respond immediately to your questions, and your approach isn't particularly collegial at this time. This isn't improving the encyclopedia. Perhaps take a break from commenting here, and allow others time to respond at the discussions linked above. Thank you for your consideration. Northamerica1000(talk) 01:10, 21 May 2013 (UTC)
Again, I never said whether or not I agreed or disagreed with your stance on changing the template. Again, I want to know why you think there's any point given the facts as they stand. Given that you refuse to answer that very simple question, it is impossible to believe you have an answer, or are arguing in good faith. 'Disruptive' is refusing to answer a simple question in a discussion. — The Potato Hose 01:31, 21 May 2013 (UTC)

Dude, chill (#3). This isn't improving the encyclopedia. Comment at the discussions instead, all you want. At this time, I'm requesting that you please stop posting here for 24 hours. This is a reasonable request, because at this point, your approach is disruptive. Northamerica1000(talk) 01:36, 21 May 2013 (UTC)

EMC: Swedish Gold "Sockadockan"

Hej!

I am Swedish Gold.

The EMC Deletion Discussion was closed last night in favor of retention. Hurrah for common sense!

At the instigation of Lukeno1994, my "price" is now to be investigated as a "sockpuppet" I have made a comment on the Sockadockan discussion you should read.

I was not informed and only found out by accident as I have been asked to analyse matters before a formal complaint is sent to Wikipedia Trustees. Ive seen some pretty bizarre actions by Luke. One was just after I started probing the probity of "Epic Crusader", last night where he wrote a message to the administrators begging for the deletion discussion to close (but he did not post that at the foot of the thread). Second, he summarily banned a Swedish user from Umeå last Saturday morning because the user let Lukeno1994 know that was upset to find out that the original author "Jono2013" had (apparently) collapsed last week due to stress brought on by the successive deletion debates etc.

Luke seems to have special powers to block users without any response, but he claims to be 18.

You were right to defend EMC. Please email me if you wish.

mvh Swedish Gold (talk) 11:00, 21 May 2013 (UTC)

OBS! If you wish to take a look I have found many "tertiary" sources for EMC. I have posted a few on my user page. All of them are available on the web, but the titles are not always self saying "EMC". One need to know what one is looking for. Jono2013 maybe didn't yet have that experience but maybe felt embarrassed to trouble people. Brits can be like that :-)

Whereas we Swedes don't see the point of half doing something. We can be very direct because we are very trusting. We trust unless otherwise. Not other way around. I will look after the page for the meantime and hope Jono2013 is okay. You can be sure he did a very great job.

Thanks for the information. I'm currently working on other stuff on Wikipedia, so I may not contribute there for a while. Cheers, Northamerica1000(talk) 13:42, 21 May 2013 (UTC)

The food list articles

I thought I'd reply here because I want to archive my talk.

Yes, huge, huge hits difference after expansion. I'm still not sure why that happens. Is it because sites link to it when complete? Anyway, I can't thank you enough for all your work on these lists. And I'm so sorry to have been so slack in that area for so long. I've had other off and on-wiki stuff that's drawn my attention. I hope to get back into it soon. In the mean time, keep up the good work, and thank you. You are responsible for such huge content production. I don't know where you get the energy. Anna Frodesiak (talk) 16:08, 21 May 2013 (UTC)

It's all good, and there's no deadline. Part of the increase in page views is likely due to people using the pages more, as in clicking through to linked articles and then going back to the list to check out others. I'm not sure about linking from other sites, but I know that Google lists them. Cheerio, Northamerica1000(talk) 16:10, 21 May 2013 (UTC)
Ah, that makes much more sense. Anna Frodesiak (talk) 16:15, 21 May 2013 (UTC)
Also, here's a new article I just created: Limburger sandwich. Feel free to improve it! Northamerica1000(talk) 16:13, 21 May 2013 (UTC)
That's disgusting! Anna Frodesiak (talk) 16:15, 21 May 2013 (UTC)
I've never had one, so it's on my list of future gastronomic adventures to experience. Northamerica1000(talk) 16:23, 21 May 2013 (UTC)
Oh, and you never need talkback with me. We're old friends. I'm always watching your page. :) Anna Frodesiak (talk) 16:17, 21 May 2013 (UTC)
Thanks, (how nice), and you saved me an extra step! Cheers, Northamerica1000(talk) 16:23, 21 May 2013 (UTC)

Burnett House

Thanks for the barnstar! These historic sites (even when destroyed) are really my biggest interest here: I find it easy to find sources about them, I can write rather comprehensive articles without spending too much time or energy (although exceptions do exist), and it all fits in well with my passion for local history. Nyttend (talk) 05:17, 24 May 2013 (UTC)

I'm also a bit of a history buff, so thanks again for creating the new William Burnett House article. Northamerica1000(talk) 05:21, 24 May 2013 (UTC)
